Today, the International Center of Photography (ICP) launches a series of Instagram takeovers in conjunction with its exhibition Sebastião Salgado: Genesis and its fall public programs series ICP Talks: Climate Change. The images featured on ICP’s Instagram this fall will highlight the critical role of photography in advancing our understanding of climate change.
Each week, a new photographer or member of the scientific community will post images to the @ICP account that illuminate issues related to climate change. The takeovers begin today with award-winning photojournalist Ron Haviv, co-founder of the photo agency VII. Subsequent weeks will feature photographers including Nina Berman, James Whitlow Delano, Balazs Gardi, Ed Kashi, Daniel Kukla, Gideon Mendel, Camille Seaman, and Joshua Wolfe as well as representatives from the Earth Institute at Columbia University.
The takeovers provide further context for the Genesis exhibition and our public programs, and many of the participants are also featured in the ICP Talk series. Today at ICP, Ron Haviv joins a panel on the role of photography in the climate change movement. On December 1, Balazs Gardi, Ed Kashi, and Camille Seaman talk about how photography can be used to illustrate the science of climate change in a discussion moderated by Francesco Fiondella of the Earth Institute’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society. And on December 15, Nina Berman shares her views in a session on fracking.
The Instagram campaign will run on the @ICP account through the week of January 5, 2015.
