In this iteration of the new Education Snapshot program series, ICP faculty Angelina Ruiz presents an introductory lecture focused on one of their upcoming summer courses, “Decolonizing Photography: Exploring the Impact of Eurocentrism on Archive" during Late Night ICP.  The lecture will be followed by an audience Q&A. 

About the Course

Photography has often been used to document and catalogue—through a white-centric viewpoint—the histories of communities that were deemed foreign. Within the art world, this has been amplified, and we have frequently seen marginalized people as no more than props in a historical archive. This course examines the visual iterations of marginalized people throughout history. Beyond combing through these histories, we work to reclaim this colonized gaze and change the narrative of archival photography. Students are encouraged to think outside the box of the expectations of archival photography.

This course is offered online, August 1-22, 2024 and meets weekly on Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET.

Angelina Ruiz is a Puerto Rican artist and writer, based in New York City. Born and raised in The Bronx, Ruiz’s work focuses on nostalgia and memory, the story of the Puerto Rican diaspora, and a constant longing for home. Their practice has spanned over 11 years, working in photography, video, and installation. Ruiz holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University, as well as a BFA in Photography from SUNY Purchase.
