Magnum photographer Cristina García Rodero was born in Puertollano, Spain, and studied painting at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Her work focuses on popular and traditional festivals, rituals, and rites mainly in Spain but also across Mediterranean Europe. The work in ICP’s collection was published in her 1989 book España Occulta, which won the Book of the Year Award at the Arles Festival of Photography. That same year she was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography.
García Rodero’s work has been widely published and exhibited internationally.
