Eyes of the World

This collection includes many of photographs published in Eyes of the World: Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and the Invention of Modern Photojournalism (2017) by Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos. These images by Capa, Taro and their colleague Chim are mostly from the Spanish Civil War (1936–39). They made photographs first for the French press and then quickly for the international press in the hopes that their work would educate readers about the war and help fight the rising tide of fascism. They were émigrés, from Hungary, Germany and Poland respectively, who created a life in Paris after fleeing anti-Semitism in their countries. They dove into the fledgling profession of modern photojournalism and became internationally respected for their work. The backs of many of these prints have marks and stamps of agencies and magazines where the prints circulated or captions written at the time or later, in different languages.
